Physics

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a particle acclerator at CERN on the French/Swiss border. It was built to collide particle together and investigate the building blocks of the universe. There are 4 main experiments using the LHC and GridPP supports them all.

They are:

  • Fusion
Scientists working on the ITER experiment, investigating the feasibility of fusion as a commercial power source. They are using grid to run simulations and analyse data.
  • PhenoGrid
A group of physicists based at Durham University using the grid resources to provide testable predictions from theoretical physics. They are the 5th largest user of GridPP resources, just behind the LHC experiments themselves.
  • Super Symmetry
Researchers at Queen Mary, University of London, Durham University and Brown University, are using the GridPP infrastructure to investigate Supersymmetric theories. There is more information on the work in the news item on it.
  • UKQCD
UKQCD aims to devlop computing facilities for lattice field theory calculations to help increase the predictive power of the Standard Model of elementary particle. The collaboration are very active within GridPP and have developed DiGs for their own use but is being exploited by cell biologists too.
